Scrap dealer pleads guilty to tax chargeFARGO – A Fargo man has pleaded guilty in U.S. District to willfully failing to file an income tax return for calendar year 2006.
According to a statement released by Timothy Purdon, U.S. attorney for North Dakota:
Hamzo Omerovic, 27, a self-employed scrap metal dealer, purchased scrap metal in Fargo and the surrounding area and sold it to other area dealers. His gross receipts in 2006 were more than $152,000, with an estimated tax loss of more than $30,000.
As part of a plea agreement, Omerovic admitted that he failed to file a tax return even though he knew he was required to.
“Self-employed persons, such as Mr. Omerovic, have an obligation to accurately report their income, deductions and credits to the IRS and maintain appropriate records of those items,” Purdon said.
The charge Omerovic pleaded guilty to is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in prison and a fine of up to $100,000.
He will be sentenced at a later date.
