Minnesota woman with dementia dies after being struck by car

DULUTH, Minn. - A 65-year-old woman was fatally injured when she was hit by a vehicle Sunday night in St. Louis County.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office reported that witnesses reported seeing a woman lying on Industrial Road about 9:15 p.m. Before they could turn around to assist her, the woman got up and was standing next to a bicycle when she was struck by another vehicle traveling eastbound.

The woman, Charlene Kelly, was airlifted to St. Luke’s hospital in Duluth. She died at 4:30 a.m., St. Louis County Sheriff Sgt. Wade Rasch said.

Kelly’s family reported that she suffered from dementia and had been gone on a bike ride for some time Sunday; family and friends were searching for her at the time of the accident.

The sheriff's office said no criminal charges are expected against the driver of the car that hit her, a 17-year-old Proctor boy.
