Director of Fargo abortion clinic appears on 'Rachel Maddow Show'
Tammi Kromenaker appeared Monday night on MSNBC’s “Rachel Maddow Show” from the WDAY-TV studio in Fargo.
The 15-minute segment at about the mid-point of the 8 p.m. cable news show focused on the renewed effort to severely restrict access to abortions in the state. The Red River Women’s Clinic is the only abortion provider in North Dakota.
Maddow, known for a liberal perspective on social issues, said “out-of-state extremists” were behind the legislation, specifically Personhood USA, a group whose website describes its cause as “working to respect the God-given right to life by recognizing all human beings as persons who are ‘created in the image of God’ from the beginning of their biological development, without exceptions.”
Kromenaker said states with only one clinic often are viewed as targets by anti-choice groups, and she hopes Gov. Jack Dalrymple will “follow his constitutional oath and veto these bills.”
Kromenaker said Personhood USA has held up election defeats of legislators who tried to block similar measures, a move that has emboldened others.
Because of the state’s huge surplus, Kromenaker said, “nobody’s afraid of spending North Dakota’s money,” and some view this as the right time and place to challenge Roe V. Wade.
“It’s not in line with what regular North Dakotans want for our state,” Kromenaker said.
