Minnesota black bear cubs named Eli, EllieELY, Minn. – The votes are in, and the latest of Lily the Internet-famous black bear’s cubs now have names: Eli and Ellie.
The names became official with the close of online voting at midnight Saturday, said Lynn Rogers, founder of the North American Bear Center, where research on Lily and her cubs is based. The cubs were born Jan. 12.
The bear center is just outside Ely, and the cubs’ names are an appropriate homage to that community, Rogers said.
“For Lily fans … it’s a reflection of their feelings for this area,” Rogers said Saturday.
In case you missed it, Lily is a black bear who first became famous online in the winter of 2010, when a camera installed in her den recorded the birth and early development of her first cub, which was given the name Hope.
In 2011, Lily gave birth on camera to cubs that were named Faith and Jason. And last year, a bear named Jewel – younger sister to Lily – gave birth to cubs named Fern and Herbie.
There’s a “den cam” with Lily and her current cubs as well, biologist Sue Mansfield said, and it’s much improved over earlier iterations.
