Unnamed all-Minnesota college hockey tournament starts next year

ST. PAUL – The Minnesota schools playing NCAA Division I men’s hockey will be split among three conferences next season. They’ll still try to make intra-state games an annual January event.

The five teams announced Saturday they’ll play a four-game tournament at Xcel Energy Center, with Minnesota serving as permanent host and the other four schools sharing the three other spots on a rotating basis. The yet-to-be-named event will feature semifinal games Friday and a consolation and championship game Saturday.

In 2014, on Jan.24, Minnesota State-Mankato will play Minnesota-Duluth and St. Cloud State will play Minnesota. Bemidji State will participate in 2015.

Minnesota will join the Big Ten, Minnesota-Duluth and St. Cloud State will help start the National Collegiate Hockey Conference, and Minnesota State-Mankato and Bemidji State will remain in the WCHA.
