Letter: Letter an insult to many womenResponse to “True place is in the house, not House” (Forum, March 21):
I happened upon this letter while reading The Forum and immediately sent my mother the link. It really hit a nerve with her. She replied: “Because they have conservative beliefs about marriage, they don’t have a right to be in the Legislature? Really? That’s like saying because I chose to stay home instead of work because of my family, then I don’t have a right to an opinion or to representation in the Legislature. Sounds a lot like bigotry to me.”
It occurred to me that my mother is the bane of feminism because she is a well-educated woman who made a conscious decision to quit her job and become a full-time stay-at-home mother. It’s something that I will never forget, and the best lesson of humility and the importance of family that I will ever receive. My mother could probably be earning six figures today if she had not made that decision.
I will never be able to repay my mother for everything that she has done. It seems to me that feminists are all for a woman’s right to choose – except when that woman chooses to stay at home instead of work.
