North Dakota abortion debate gets heated in House

BISMARCK — Discussion on the House floor got heated as North Dakota lawmakers debated a slew of anti-abortion measures.

Republican Al Carlson of Fargo urged lawmakers Friday to "pick your side" in the fight and to "stay to your side."

He said, "Either you're pro-life or against it. Don't politicize it."

Carlson said he cast his votes in support of anti-abortion legislation to defend the lives of North Dakotans.

Gail Mooney, a Democrat from Cummings, was equally passionate on the other side, saying that her votes against the measures were to protect women, their families and their ability to decide with their doctors the fate of their pregnancy rather than have the decision dictated by a legislative assembly.

The House passed three of the four anti-abortion measures it considered Friday.
