Shanley's A.J. Jacobson wins ND boys BB Gatorade Player of the Year Award

FARGO – Standout 6-foot-6 Fargo Shanley senior forward A.J. Jacobson was named North Dakota’s 2012-13 Gatorade Boys Basketball Player of the Year on Thursday.

Jacobson – a North Dakota State basketball signee – is the first Shanley boys basketball player to win the award in its 28-year history. Jacobson now becomes a finalist for the National Gatorade Player of the Year Award which will be announced later this month.

The award is just one of many Jacobson has collected over his career with the Deacons. Jacobson – who averaged 26.4 points per game, 12.8 rebounds per game, 5.1 assists per game, 2.5 blocks per game and 2.6 steals per game this season – was awarded the state’s Mr. Basketball award following Shanley’s 73-54 win over Bismarck in the Class A state championship game last Saturday. He scored 37 in Shanley’s win over Fargo Davies in the semifinals.

Jacobson eclipsed 2,000 career points in the title game breaking the unofficial Class A state career scoring record of 1,996 points. Jacobson finished his career with 2,002 points and was one of only two Class A basketball players to score more than 600 points this season.
