Walton resigns as Park Christian boys basketball coach

MOORHEAD – After three years at the helm of Moorhead Park Christian’s boys basketball team, Gary Walton resigned this week as coach of the Falcons.

“It was emotional,” said Walton. “I have a great relationship with the kids, but I’m happy where I’m leaving the program. They have the core returning next year and they should be good.”

After eight years of coaching varsity basketball, Walton is leaving the game to take a position as a national representative for Bibles International in Grand Rapids, Mich.

“It’s exciting,” Walton said. “It’s a new opportunity.”

After 16 years in Moorhead, Walton along with his wife and five children will head to Michigan in June.

Park Christian accumulated 142 wins in the six seasons before he arrived.

Walton’s first two seasons were rough, as the Falcons finished 6-21 and 8-19. This last season was the best under Walton, as the Falcons finished 16-10. With a freshman point guard in Zach Kvalvog and the two leading scorers being juniors Matt Moberg and Hunter Nickel, the core is set to return next season for the Falcons.

“We had a rough couple of seasons to start, but things turned around this season,” Walton said. “The core should be returning. I’m really happy the way I’m leaving the program.”

As for getting back into coaching, Walton hasn’t ruled it out.

“My schedule will be a little different, but I could see myself coaching again,” Walton said. “I love basketball and I love mentoring and teaching and being in kids’ lives. I’m sure I’ll find an outlet for that.”
