Weather Talk: A year ago today in F-M, it was almost 80 degrees

One year ago, we were basking in temperatures in the 70s: A year ago today it was almost 80 (78 degrees).

March 2012 was the warmest March on record and, effectively, the earliest start to spring. March finished at 13.8 degrees above average, breaking the record set in 1910.

In sharp contrast, the first half of March this year has been about 5 degrees below average. Because the average temperatures rise so much during March, our ongoing winter weather pattern will likely take that average down a few more degrees by the end of this week.

A lot of our frustration with our cold and snowy March is probably due to our skewed memories of March a year ago. Last March was unusual. So far, last March was more unusually warm and pleasant than this March has been cold and stormy.

Nonetheless, the effect has been a little like that of the Finnish tradition of running from the sauna to jump into the frozen lake.
