Fargo Davies defeats Mandan in Class A boys state quarterfinals

BISMARCK – Bart Manson threw a little boxing terminology at his Fargo Davies basketball team.

“He told us (before the game) that we had to come out and throw the first punch, to attack, attack, attack,” Eagles guard Tanner Kretchman said.

The Eagles jumped to a 19-2 lead and never trailed, running to a 75-47 win over Mandan Thursday in the quarterfinals of the North Dakota Class A stat boys basketball tournament.

Davies will play Fargo Shanley in today’s semifinal at 8:30 p.m.

“Our defense created a lot of turnovers,” Kretchman said. “That allowed us to get out and get some easy baskets. We like the transition game. It definitely is up there with one of the top two or three halves we’ve played this year.”

Davies, a third-year school, is making its first state tournament appearance. While Manson stressed a fast start, not even he was expecting what happened.

“You never think a 19-2 start,” Manson said. “What surprised me was the defense. Normally teams are going to make some shots.”

That didn’t happen in a first half that ended with the Eagles leading 41-13. Mandan was just 3-for-24 from the field in the opening 18 minutes, with 10 turnovers.

“Our zone was pretty effective,” Manson said. “We were active in it. It took them awhile to adjust to it.”

Mandan’s shooting improved in the second half, as the Braves finished 16-for-58 (27 percent) from the floor. But that was no match for a Davies team that was 30-for-55 (54.5 percent). Mandan got no closer than 18 points in the second half.

Kretchman poured in 24 points, including 4-of-6 shooting on 3-point attempts, to lead Davies. Backcourt mate Andrew Kozlowski added 16 points, while Eric Peterson was 7-for-8 from the field in scoring 14 points and leading Davies with eight rebounds.

Erron Collins and Keetan Wanner each scored 14 to lead Davies.
