West Fargo defeats Jamestown in Class A girls quarterfinals

BISMARCK – Jamestown had plenty of staying power, but it was West Fargo’s refusal to give up its lead that won out.

West Fargo posted a 71-66 win over Jamestown during the quarterfinals of the North Dakota Class A state girls basketball tournament on Thursday at the Bismarck Civic Center.

The Blue Jays got to within striking distance of the Packers several times late in the second half, but were never able to break through and take a lead. West Fargo (20-3) led 35-32 at halftime and never trailed in the second half.

“We really played together as a team and kept with it the whole game,” said junior forward Amanda Levin, who led all scorers with 20 points. “We stayed calm for the most part (in the second half) and played our game. We kept focusing at what we needed to do.”

Jamestown’s Paige Peterson hit a shot with just under four minutes left in regulation to cut West Fargo’s lead to 57-56. West Fargo senior guard Christine Baltezore answered Peterson’s shot with a 3-pointer with 3 minutes, 17 seconds left in regulation.

“Resilience is something we have been preaching all year,” West Fargo head coach Barb Metcalf said. “This was one of the best games of the day. It was just two teams duking it out.”

The No. 3-ranked Packers advance to play Bismarck in today’s 3 p.m. semifinals.

Levin scored 16 of her 20 points in the second half.

“We have been telling (Amanda) all season long she has to shoot the ball,” Metcalf said. “She has a nice shot. She does so many things for us defensively that I think sometimes she just gets in that defensive mode. She forgets that she is a good shooter.”

Jamestown’s Kyra Dewald scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Blue Jays (15-5). Dewald also eclipsed the 1,000 points scoring milestone during the game and now sits at 1,007 points.

“We battled,” Jamestown head coach Andy Skunberg said. “We just had a couple bad possessions at some bad times in the game. We got some empty looks and made a couple turnovers. It was an even game, but they made seven more free throws that we did.”

Jamestown plays Wahpeton in the consolation semifinals at 6 p.m. today in Exhibition Hall.
