Ada-Borup boys defeat Ulen-Hitterdal for sub-section title

MOORHEAD – Less than three minutes into the game, Ada-Borup had a double-digit lead Tuesday night at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.

That brisk start proved to be the difference.

The Cougars scored the game’s first 10 points en route to a 49-39 victory against Ulen-Hitterdal for the Minnesota Class 1A, Section 6 boys basketball semifinals.

“It was huge because they are very patient and they are very fundamental,” Ada-Borup head coach Trevor Stewart said of the strong start.

The Cougars (23-5) won their second consecutive North sub-section title with the victory. They play Battle Lake at 7 p.m. Friday in Morris for the section championship. Ada-Borup has played in the sub-section title game five consecutive seasons.

“It’s a good step for the program and excellent for the kids,” Stewart said.

For a second year in row, Ulen-Hitterdal (22-7) had its season end against Ada-Borup in the sub-section title game.

“It’s not the ending we were looking for, but I’m still proud of them, and they still had a very successful year,” Ulen-Hitterdal head coach Brett Maass said.

Ada-Borup scored five seconds after the opening tip with junior guard Lance Ruebke getting free for a layup. The Cougars followed that with a layup in transition, a 3-point play and a 3-pointer.

Junior guard Blake Fetting sank the 3-pointer that gave Ada-Borup a 10-0 lead with 15 minutes, 25 seconds remaining in the first half. Fetting finished with 16 points, including two

3-pointers.

The Cougars never trailed, and the Spartans didn’t get closer than seven points of the lead after that opening Ada-Borup burst.

“That was big coming into the game,” said Ruebke, who finished with a game-high 17 points.

Ulen-Hitterdal cut the Ada-Borup lead to 42-35 after senior guard Neil Henrickson sank a jumper with 5:20 remaining in the second half. The Cougars countered with the next seven points to seal the victory. Ruebke scored six of those points, including four free throws.
