Kindred, Central Cass girls cruise to Region 1 opening-round wins

FARGO – University of North Dakota volleyball coach Ashley Hardee was watching two of his recruits play basketball Monday in the Fargo Civic Center.

But before Kindred’s Kellie Schmit and Central Cass’ Faith Dooley can worry about volleyball, they have some business to take care of tonight when they face each other in the North Dakota Class B Region 1 girls basketball tournament semifinals.

Dooley, a 6-foot-3 junior who has already committed to UND volleyball, had 19 points, seven rebounds and eight blocked shots to lift Central Cass to a 52-22 opening-round win over North Sargent.

Schmit, a 5-11 senior, had 17 points and 17 rebounds to lift defending region champ Kindred to a 64-41 opening-round win over Milnor.

Now the two will guard each other in today’s 6 p.m. semifinal game.

“The two schools have become pretty good rivals,” Dooley said.

“I’m excited … it’s going to be a big game,” said Schmit, whose team lost at home to Central Cass 60-54 in January. “We will definitely have to fight through the whole game.”

Kindred 64, Milnor 41

Kindred is hoping their hot shooting continues tonight – after pouring in a season-high 11 3-pointers against Milnor.

“We shared the ball really well,” said Kindred coach Perry Piatz, whose team improved to 17-5. “And when our shooters get time to shoot, they usually make them.”

Junior Brooke Graff led the shooting barrage with four 3-pointers. Sophomore Alexis Piatz had three treys while Schmit and senior Casey Allmaras each had two.

“We are a good shooting team, hopefully that continues,” Schmit said.

Milnor, whose season ends with a 13-9 record, was led by Rachel Sakry and Jackie Ellefson who each scored 11 points.

Central Cass 52, North Sargent 22

North Sargent had no answer for Dooley, who scored at will inside while keeping the Bobcats from scoring on the other end of the floor.

“I feel like they get nervous when they try to put a shot up against me,” said Dooley, whose eight blocks were three more than her average. “I just put my arms straight up and try to stay big.”

Central Cass, who improved its record to 20-3, scored the game’s first 17 points. Dooley had 10 of them.

North Sargent, whose season ends with an 8-15 record, was led by Lindsy’s Hansana’s eight points and five rebounds.
