Peterson makes key free throws, layup for Ulen-Hitterdal in win

MOORHEAD – The majority of points, as usual, came from Neil Henrickson and Landon Schultz for the Ulen-Hitterdal boys basketball team. But the biggest ones came from Cole Peterson.

The 6-foot-3 senior made two free throws and a breakaway layup in the final 36 seconds to cap Ulen-Hitterdal’s come-from-behind 39-35 win over Fergus Falls Hillcrest in Saturday’s Minnesota Class 1A, Section 6 quarterfinals at Concordia’s Memorial Auditorium.

“We don’t look for him to score that much, but we do trust him,” said Henrickson, who lofted a pass to Peterson for a wide-open layup with 10 seconds remaining. “It was the easiest shot of the game and he hit it.”

Henrickson and Schultz, who average 22 points and 15 points, respectively, combined to score 15 points during a 16-3 run that helped Ulen-Hitterdal overcome a 24-14 deficit. They each finished with 14 points.

“They came out and smacked us in the mouth,” said Henrickson of Hillcrest, which ends with a 14-9 record. “But we didn’t panic.”

The 22-6 Spartans will now play an 8 p.m. section semifinal game Tuesday at Minnesota State Moorhead against Ada-Borup – a team they split with this season and a team they lost to in last year’s section semifinals.

“They are really good,” said Ulen-Hitterdal coach Brett Maass. “We have to play very well to beat them.”

Ada-Borup 74,

Park Christian 65

Lance Ruebke and his Ada-Borup teammates had one thing on their mind Saturday: defense.

That’s what sparked the Cougars to a 74-65 win over Moorhead Park Christian in the first quarterfinal game. It avenged a regular-season 77-71 loss to Park Christian.

“That loss definitely made us work harder,” said Ruebke, a 5-foot-11 junior point guard who led all scorers with 21 points. “We really wanted to beat them this time. Our defense was the difference.”

It showed, especially during the last six minutes of the first half when the Cougars erupted for a 13-0 run that gave them a 33-19 halftime lead. Park Christian committed 13 of its 16 turnovers in the first half.

“We’ve had our good and bad with defense this year, but during that stretch, we really played well defensively,” said Ada-Borup head coach Trevor Stewart, whose team improved to 22-5.

The halftime deficit was too much for the young Park Christian squad to overcome. Playing with only one senior starter, Park Christian (16-10) managed to cut the lead to seven points, 52-45, with less than seven minutes remaining.

Matt Moberg, a 6-foot junior, led the Falcons with 17 points. He scored 10 during an eight-minute stretch in the second half before fouling out with 1:33 remaining.
