Fargo Shanley earns trip to state with win over Fargo South at East Region basketball tourney

FARGO – The Fargo Shanley boys basketball team bounced back in a big way on Saturday.

Fresh off a loss to Fargo Davies in the semifinals of the North Dakota Class A, East Region tournament on Friday night, the Deacons recovered to post a 79-62 win over Fargo South in a state-qualifying game at the Bison Sports Arena.

Shanley senior forward A.J. Jacobson led all scorers with 25 points and dodged an abrupt end to his standout prep career.

The victory secured the No. 3-ranked Deacons a berth in the state tournament, which begins Thursday in Bismarck.

Shanley is making its fourth straight trip to state and the 24th appearance in program history. The Deacons (18-4) lost to Grand Forks Red River in the state championship game a year ago.

“There was a sense of urgency,” said Jacobson, who also grabbed 13 rebounds. “We have a sour taste in our mouth from last year at state losing the championship game. We knew that we had unfinished business at the state tournament.”

The Deacons will be the No. 4 seed from the East. Shanley plays the West Region’s No. 1 seed Bismarck in the quarterfinals at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Bismarck Civic Center.

Saturday’s game started unpleasant for Shanley. The Deacons fell behind 10-2 early in the first half, but recovered with a 12-0 run to get back in the game.

“South is a good team,” Jacobson said. “They know how to play with the guys they have and those Lloyd brothers (Colton and Paxton) are talented. We had to play a lot better defense than we played against Davies.

“South came out and played really well at the start of the game,” Jacobson added. “We bounced back and luckily got the win.”

After going back and forth with the Bruins much of the first half, Shanley closed the final 3 minutes, 55 seconds of the first half on a 12-2 run. All of that came without starting point guard Dylan Alderman, who was on the bench with foul trouble.

“Without Dylan out there steering the ship, we were able to stretch it out, which doesn’t normally happen,” Fargo Shanley head coach Shane Alderman said. “It was a great boost for all the guys on the floor.”

Shanley’s Patrick Strom started the run with a 3-pointer that put the Deacons up 30-28. Shanley never trailed from that point the rest of the game.

Strom finished with 21 points and Dylan Alderman added 17.

Senior Paxton Lloyd paced the Bruins with 21 points. Fargo South ends its season 11-11.
