Shanley girls advance to East Region championship game

FARGO – Top-seeded Fargo Shanley raced to a double-digit lead less than six minutes into the game Friday at the Fargo Civic Center.

That fast start fueled the Deacons to a 60-38 victory against Grand Forks Red River in the semifinals of the North Dakota East Region girls basketball tournament.

“We had a real strong start,” said Deacons head coach Tim Jacobson. “The girls were really sharp. … I thought tonight defensively we just played really quick.”

Shanley (19-2) advanced to the region championship game and earned a spot in next week’s Class A state tournament. The Deacons are playing in the region title game for a second consecutive season.

“It’s exciting,” said Shanley senior Kelly Weir, who had 16 points. “We work for it all year just to get there and to be able to go is rewarding.”

The Deacons scored the game’s first 13 points against Red River and never trailed. Freshman point guard Sarah Jacobson drained two 3-pointers during that opening rally. Sophomore forward Alivia Fraase sank a foul shot that gave Shanley a 13-0 lead with 12 minutes, 31 seconds remaining in the first half.

“They’re a very good team,” Red River head coach Kent Ripplinger said of Shanley. “Defensively, they just make it tough. … They got out to a good start and knocked shots down.”

The Deacons led by as many as 24 points in the first half and took a 35-13 lead into halftime. Shanley had four players score at least seven points before halftime. Weir had nine points in the opening 18 minutes.

“Our offense has become five-dimensional,” Tim Jacobson said. “We are looking for everybody to contribute.”

Red River senior guard Ellie Ripplinger reached 1,000 career points during the first half. She finished with a team-high 10 points and has 1,006 for her career.
