Argusville man sentenced to 7 years, 2 months in cornfield incident

MOORHEAD – An Argusville, N.D., man accused of choking and assaulting his girlfriend last July in a cornfield north of Georgetown was sentenced Thursday to seven years and two months in prison after pleading guilty to simple assault.

In exchange for his guilty plea in Clay County District Court, 33-year-old Peter William Ihnken had four other charges against him dropped: two counts of domestic assault and two counts of criminal sexual conduct.

Ihnken was arrested last August after being accused in July of strangling and assaulting his girlfriend in the cornfield.

Judge Michelle Lawson said in court that Ihnken’s sentence was the result of a double upward departure from Minnesota sentencing guidelines, based on the fact that Ihnken was convicted of his third violent felony, and that he was deemed a danger to public safety.

As part of the terms of his sentence, he is required to register as a predatory offender, and needs to provide the court with a DNA. sample.
