Valley City State falls in NAIA men's basketball tournament

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. – Kegan Clark scored 17 points and added seven rebounds to help No. 11 Indiana University Southeast earn a 75-72 victory against Valley City State in the first round of the NAIA Division II men’s basketball tournament on Wednesday.

Sekani Milligen paced the Vikings with a game-high 23 points. Milligen sank a 3-pointer that gave VCSU a 72-71 lead with less than a minute remaining.

Clark countered with the go-ahead basket moments later and Kevin Mitchell added two foul shots for the final margin.

Dillan Ostrom added 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds for VCSU. John Raquel added 11 points.

Mayville women fall to 3-time defending champs

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Kendra De Jong scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to help lead No. 7-ranked Northwestern (Iowa) to a 92-66 victory against Mayville State in the first round of the NAIA Division II women’s basketball tournament.

Northwestern (24-7) is the three-time defending national champion.

Hailey Longtin paced the Comets with 17 points, including three 3-pointers. Samantha Heier added 14 points and five rebounds.

Mayville State (20-6) was making its first national tournament appearance in program history.

VCSU women lose in 1st round to Bethel

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – No. 11 Bethel (Ind.) College shot 53 percent in the first half Wednesday. That hot shooting helped spark the Pilots to a 79-63 victory against Valley City State in the first round of the NAIA Division II women’s basketball tournament.

Laura Johnson paced Bethel, scoring a game-high 24 points on 10-for-14 shooting from the field. Johnson sank four 3-pointers. The Pointers never trailed and led 40-22 at halftime.

Brittany Lehner paced the Vikings with 16 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the floor. She was the lone VCSU player to score in double digits.
