Police allege DNA links suspect to West Fargo Animal Hospital burglary

WEST FARGO – A 24-year-old suspect linked to the burglary of an animal hospital here via DNA evidence made a pre-trial appearance in court Wednesday.

Kenneth Edward Hampsmire, of Becker County, Minn., faces charges of burglary and theft of property for allegedly breaking into the West Fargo Animal Hospital, 730 13th Ave. E., through a window on July 15, 2012, and stealing animal medication.

Hampsmire was arrested Feb. 5, after a warrant was issued for his arrest last December. The North Dakota State Crime Lab was able to match DNA found at the scene to Hampsmire, which led to the warrant, according to a release from West Fargo Police.

His next court date is scheduled for April 30 in Cass County District Court. Both charges he faces are felonies.

Assistant Police Chief Michael Reitan said in an email that a second suspect being sought in the burglary has been located but not arrested.
