Concordia's Weiler accepts women's soccer job at Christopher Newport University

MOORHEAD – Concordia head women’s soccer coach Dan Weiler is headed to Virginia.

Weiler has accepted the head women’s soccer job at Christopher Newport University in Newport News.

“The big motivator is that my wife and I wanted to experience a new part of the country,” Weiler said.

Weiler posted a 144-58-24 record in his 11 seasons with the women’s team at Concordia.

“I would never leave this program for just anything,” Weiler said. “It had to be a program similar to Concordia.”

Christopher Newport, like Concordia, competes in NCAA Division III.

Weiler, who also was head coach for the Cobbers men’s program for five seasons, led the women’s team to the Division III tournament six times. Weiler had 6-6-1 record in NCAA tournament games at Concordia.

“You hate to have him leave, but the program is going to go on,” Cobbers athletic director Rich Glas said. “He established a good program and we’ll hire a good coach and things will continue on and we’ll do well.”

Glas said he would like to have a new coach hired by mid-to-late April.

Last fall, Weiler led the Cobbers to a 17-4-2 record. They won the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament crowns.

Concordia also advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. Weiler said he told his team Tuesday that he had taken the new job.

“The hardest part for me was talking to my current players,” Weiler said. “That was difficult for me to express how much they meant to me. … The other equally hard part is leaving our families in this area.”

Weiler and his wife, Kilee Kadrie Weiler, are both from Fargo and went the Fargo South.

“I thank Concordia for starting my career,” Dan Weiler said. “It’s been a great place for us to live and to work.”
