Prior Lake standout commits to Bison basketball teamFARGO – As a former graduate assistant basketball coach at South Dakota State, Alex Focke studied plenty of videotape of former North Dakota State star Ben Woodside. That came after Focke’s brother was the play-by-play announcer for Woodside’s high school team.
Whether the Prior Lake High School head coach has another Woodside at his side remains to be seen. But guard Jon Sobaski gave the Bison a verbal commitment this week and will be part of next fall’s recruiting class.
“I think there are definite comparisons there, but Jon has to get better when he gets to college,” Focke said. “He does have the work ethic and determination.”
The 6-foot Sobaski has a similar build to Woodside and plays the same position: point guard. Focke said he’s given Sobaski DVDs of Woodside in college.
He’s the first verbal commitment for the 2014 recruiting class that is expected to be a large one. The Bison have six juniors on their roster.
Signed for next year are guard A.J. Jacobson from Fargo Shanley and guard Carlin Dupree from Bay View High in Milwaukee as Bison freshmen.
Sobaski averages 18 points, five assists, five rebounds and four steals a game and is shooting 45 percent from the field. He’s been a starter since his freshman season.
Focke said the University of South Dakota also offered Sobaski.
“Jon’s recruitment started picking up with the mid-majors,” he said.
