Central Cass tops Maple Valley in District 2 girls BB title game

FARGO – Something had to give in the fourth quarter of Monday night’s North Dakota Class B, District 2 girls basketball championship game.

Maple Valley and Central Cass had entered halftime tied and after the conclusion of the third quarter, once again there was more gridlock.

It was the Squirrels that made a move in the final eight minutes of their 52-45 win over the Raiders at the Fargo Civic Center.

Central Cass (19-3) started the fourth quarter on a 6-0 run and led 39-33 after senior Ally Tronson connected for a layup with 5 minutes, 57 seconds remaining in regulation.

“We had a nice little run there and we were able to maintain it,” Central Cass head coach Ryan Mears said. “We were able to get some transition buckets out of that.”

Tronson’s bucket forced Maple Valley to call a time out. The Squirrles’ run came with Maple Valley freshman standout Rylee Nudell on the bench.

Central Cass – the No. 1 seed from District 2 – advances to play District 2 No. 4-seeded North Sargent in the quarterfinals of the Region 1 tournament at 3 p.m. on March 11 at the Fargo Civic Center.

Maple Valley never fully answered the Squirrels’ run in the fourth quarter. The Raiders (18-4) got to within four points of Central Cass when Megan Kasowski connected on a jumper to make it 48-44 with 12.2 seconds.

“That was the difference,” Maple Valley head coach Jeff Miller said of the Squirrels fourth-quarter burst. “We played pretty even with them most of the game and I was happy with the way we played.

“We hung with them, but fell behind for one little stretch of the basketball game.”

Maple Valley plays District 1 No. 3-seeded Lisbon in the Region 1 quarterfinals.

Central Cass senior Hannah Breske – a North Dakota State basketball signee – paced the Squirrels with 12 points and eight rebounds.

Nudell led all scorers with 25 points and also finished with 12 rebounds.
