Letter: North Dakota Legislature’s actions are an embarrassment

The North Dakota Legislature has run amok. As a lifelong Republican, I am embarrassed and sadly disappointed.

Our lawmakers have decided to repeat history and jealously try to control that unruly higher education system. Unbelievably, the local media seem to support that attempt, and some of the Fargo legislators actually do so. We, the people of North Dakota, long ago removed the system from political interference. Surely we will not let that be undone by replacing the board with a politically controlled government bureau.

Another unbelievable development is the sudden activity intended to place financial limitations on the Fargo flood control plans, a move apparently supported by most of the Fargo legislators. What possible benefit do they see that would offset the damage it does to the progress of the plans?

As a proud 1953 NDAC graduate whose career has been almost entirely in Fargo, I am amazed at what North Dakota and our higher education system have accomplished. We are at the top, and we should not let a bunch of politicians in Bismarck ruin that for us.
