Mahnomen-Waubun wrestler Hoffner remains perfect

ST. PAUL – With six trips to the Minnesota Class 1A individual state wrestling tournament, Mahnomen-Waubun 152-pounder Garret Hoffner has gotten so used to the Xcel Energy Center, he could make his way through it in the dark, as if it were his home.

After losing a contact in his left eye less than a minute into his quarterfinal matchup versus Pierz’s Brad Meyer, Hoffner pretty much had to do just that.

“I can barely see without my contact,” said Hoffner, while squinting after his win. “He poked me in the eye and my contact was all scrunched up and worthless. I was basically cross-eyed for the match.”

When you’ve gone a perfect 43-0, you can win that way. Hoffner won a 5-1 decision and punched his ticket to the semifinals. The senior guaranteed at least a tie for his best finish at state with the win in the quarterfinals, as Hoffner locked up at least a fifth-place finish. In his final season, Hoffner wants more.

“I worked so much for this moment,” Hoffner said. “I want to leave everything on the mat, and I think I’m going to get it done this year. I’ve had so many setbacks, and wrestling is such a great sport, because it teaches you with those setbacks.”

120-pounder Shane Novak took a step back and stared at the ground with wide eyes when asked what it was like to be wrestling in his final state tournament. In this his fifth trip, Novak hadn’t even thought about it.

Novak won the state championship at 113 pounds last season and will wrestle in the semifinals today at 120 pounds, where he is ranked No. 1 in the state.

Frazee sent nine individuals into the individual state tournament, but only one came out the other side. Bruce Lemon won a 1-0 decision in the quarterfinals at 138 pounds to lock up a spot in the semifinals.
