Concordia falls in first round of NCAA Division III women's basketball tournament

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Liz Althoff and Sam Barber combined for 53 points to lead Wisconsin-Stevens Point to a 72-64 victory against Concordia on Friday in the opening round of the NCAA Division III women’s basketball tournament.

Althoff scored a game-high 28 points, including 15-for-17 shooting from the foul line. Barber added 25 points on 11-for-19 shooting from the floor.

“It was a tough matchup,” said Cobbers senior forward Tricia Sorensen. “They had a good offense.”

Sorensen led Concordia with 17 points. Junior center Alexandra Lippert had 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Senior guard Emily Thesing added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The Cobbers took a 52-50 lead after Thesing sank a 3-pointer with around 6 minutes to play in the second half. The Pointers countered with the next six points to forge into the lead for good.

“They had the one little spurt at the end, which was the big one,” Cobbers head coach Jessica Rahman said. “I think both teams were battling back and forth so much.”

The Cobbers have lost in the first round of their past five appearances in the D-III tournament.

Concordia hasn’t won an NCAA tournament game since 1995.

Sorensen and Thesing are the only two seniors on the Concordia roster.

“When I think about this team, they’re so close knit, and that’s the tough part,” Rahman said. “Everybody was just so all in. … It was a big family.”
