Thursday review: Tarte’s bold hues stay put

FARGO – For about seven months, I’ve been looking for a stay-put, mostly natural, color-rich lipstick.

After trying a dozen lipsticks ranging in price from $2.99 to $26, I finally found a tube that’s almost perfect.

Tarte’s Glamazon Pure Performance 12-Hour Lipstick, $26 at Sephora, delivers intense color with staying power – and it has a mostly natural ingredients list.

I purchased “Bold,” a vibrant coral that brightens my fair complexion. Ten other shades are available, ranging from a peach hue called “Enlightened” to a cool red called “Wild.” The colors are highly pigmented with no shimmer or extreme shine, which I think can cheapen the look of lipstick.

Although it’s a creamy lipstick, it dries quickly after application. I have a history of getting lipstick on my teeth, so fast-drying formulas are great for me, but some days it feels too drying. I combat the dryness with a thin layer of lip balm before applying the lipstick.

Like most bold-colored lipsticks, a mirror is necessary for proper application. Its rich color is very noticeable if it gets outside the natural lip lines.

The lipstick stays put for about six hours for me, which is more than I can say for other brands I’ve tried. As it fades, it looks more like a lip stain rather than lipstick. It tends to get clumpy in areas where lips are dry, so wiping my lips clean after half a day and starting over is usually the best option.

Bottom line: Try the lipstick before you buy it to find your perfect shade. At $26 a pop, it’s not cheap, but it’s worth it if you want lipstick with staying power and vibrant color.
