Central Cass, Milnor advance at Region 1 tourney

WAHPETON, N.D. – Central Cass survived a scare on Monday.

The District 2 No. 2-seeded Squirrels squeaked by Hankinson 63-60 during the quarterfinals of the North Dakota Class B, Region 1 boys basketball tournament at Ed Werre Arena.

Hankinson, who once trailed Central Cass by 17 points late in the first half, got to within two points of the Squirrels with under a minute left in regulation.

Sam Mauch completed a three-point play with less than 15 seconds left, making it 62-60. The Pirates fouled Ellery Bresnahan, who made one of two free throws, but the Pirates were unable to attempt a 3-pointer for a chance to send the game in overtime.

“The most important part is that we got the win,” Central Cass head coach Mike Kegley said. “Hankinson did a lot of good things. They were very active defensively and they caused some trouble for us. Honestly we did some things at the end of the game that you can’t do if you are going to be a good team.”

Bresnahan, a University of North Dakota baseball commit, scored a game-high 29 points to lead Central Cass.

“Coming in, we knew that we were a good basketball team,” Bresnahan said. “We just got really lackadaisical once we got that lead. We were lucky to come away with the win. We did what we had to do to win at the end of the game.”

The Squirrels (17-6) play Milnor in the semifinals today 20 minutes following the first semifinals game between Oak Grove and Maple Valley, which starts at 6 p.m.

Milnor defeated Central Cass 102-84 during the regular season.

“Our defense has to play a lot better than we did the first time,” Bresnahan said of playing the Bison. “Eighty four points is alright on offense, but we have to stop them from scoring on us as much as they did the last time.”

Central Cass led 41-26 at halftime.

“Credit (Hankinson) for not quitting when they got down 17,” Kegley said. “We started to rest and it was a combination them playing hard and us not doing that. We have to figure out how to fix those things in the next 24 hours and come back (today) and play a very good Milnor team.”

Mauch finished with 16 points for the Pirates (10-12).

Milnor 74, Enderlin 58

Milnor made sure it was not a clean sweep for District 2 on Monday.

Briton Bussman scored a game-high 25 points pacing the Bison to a 74-58 quarterfinals win over Enderlin.

The Bison (17-6) rattled off a 9-1 run to start the fourth quarter giving them a 12-point lead.

“That was the second game in a row where we have come out and had a nice fourth quarter,” Milnor head coach Benjamin Nelson said. “It started with our defense. We clamped down and got our help-side defense working.”

Milnor plays Central Cass today in the semifinals 20 minutes following the Oak Grove-Maple Valley game.

Bussman eclipsed the 1,000 points mark during the victory.

“That is a huge accomplishment,” Nelson said. “This is only his second year of playing varsity.”

The Bison led 22-11 after the first quarter, but only led 33-32 at halftime after the Eagles scored 21 points in the second quarter.

Daniel Lindgren scored 21 points to lead the Eagles. Enderlin was making its first appearance in the Region 1 tournament since 1996 and finishes its season 14-9.

Wyatt Mund added 19 points and eight rebounds for the Bison.
