Maple Valley edges Lidgerwood-Wyndmere in OT at Region 1 boys BB tourney

WAHPETON, N.D. – Persistence paid off on Monday for Maple Valley senior point guard Jordan Haseleu.

Haseleu hit two field goals in the final two minutes of regulation, but it was a jump shot that fell with 27 seconds left in overtime that finally put the Raiders over the top.

Maple Valley defeated Lidgerwood-Wyndmere 66-63 in overtime in the quarterfinals of the North Dakota Class B, Region 1 boys basketball tournament at Ed Werre Arena.

“My teammates look up to me and I’m the leader on the team,” said Haseleu, who finished with 29 points. “They expect me to hit those shots.”

Haseleu was 11 of 20 from the field and finished with three 3-pointers.

“We want the ball in his hands,” Maple Valley head coach Jayson Kocka said. “He is a big-time player and he wants to have the ball in those situations. We wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Maple Valley (18-4) plays Oak Grove in the semifinals at 6 p.m. today.

“We will be hoping they miss some shots,” Haseleu said of the Grovers. “We got to put our hands up, box out and cherish every possession.”

Haseleu’s two field goals at the end of regulation were not enough to ground the Warbirds. Lidgerwood-Wyndmere senior Jeff Illies hit an off-balance 3-pointer from well beyond the arc with 3 seconds left to play tying the game 57-57.

Illies – a North Dakota State football signee – finished with a game-high 33 points and 11 rebounds for the Warbirds (13-9). Illies scored L-W’s first 13 points of the game.

“We had a play designed for him,” Warbirds head coach Todd Hosford said. “We didn’t expect him to be that far away from the basket, but he has been hitting big shots his whole career. We definitely wanted the ball in his hands late in the game. He went out with a bang.”

The Warbirds led 28-19 at halftime.

Oak Grove 81, Sargent Central 63

Even the highly potent offense of the Fargo Oak Grove boys basketball team has its off days.

On Monday, the Grovers struggled converting during the first three quarters, but recovered to post an 81-63 quarterfinals win over Sargent Central.

Sargent Central led twice during the third quarter and held an 18-14 lead over the No. 6-ranked Grovers after the first quarter.

“Give coach (Rod) Kramer and his team a lot of credit,” Grovers head coach Kyle Card said. “They came out with a good game plan, executed it and made plays. We got frustrated and quit attacking the basket.

“A sign of a good team is overcoming that and we are moving on.”

The Grovers (21-2) advance to play Maple Valley in the semifinals at 6 p.m. today.

Oak Grove shot 41 percent (13 of 31) in the first half and missed several close range shots early on. The sluggish start prevented the Grovers from doing what they do best: Running the court and scoring baskets by the bunches.

“We came out cold,” Oak Grove senior forward Alex Widmer said. “We were not making shots and we were missing lay ups. We started getting frustrated so we came in at halftime, buckled down and played better in the second half.”

Sargent Central led 50-47 in the final minute of the third quarter, but the Grovers ended with a 7-0 run fueled by four free throws from Nick Card and a three-point play by Christian Adams.

Oak Grove never surrendered the lead during the final eight minutes of regulation.

Widmer, who finished with 12 points, hit two key three pointers in the fourth quarter. His first put the Grovers up 67-57 with 3:30 left to play.

Tyler Christianson paced the Grovers with 16 points and nine rebounds.
