Bison women hang on for 63-62 home win over Nebraska-Omaha

FARGO – Nebraska-Omaha cut a double-digit deficit in the second half down to a single point in the final seconds. But North Dakota State was able to get one last key rebound to preserve a victory.

UNO’s Paige Frauendorfer missed a 12-foot baseline jumper with 2 seconds left, and Marena Whittle grabbed the rebound as the Bison defeated the Mavericks 63-62 in Summit League women’s basketball Saturday at the Bison Sports Arena.

Katie Birkel, who had a game-high 23 points, hit two free throws with 19 seconds left, giving the Bison a 63-59 lead. UNO’s Carolyn Blair-Mobley answered with a basket to cut the deficit to two with 13 seconds left.

When NDSU inbounded the ball, Birkel got tied up 9.3 seconds left and called timeout, but the Bison had no timeouts left. Frauendorfer made only 1 of 2 free throws, leaving NDSU up by one. When given the chance to hit the winning basket after UNO inbounded, she couldn’t hit the shot.

“We make things interesting,” NDSU head coach Carolyn DeHoff said with a laugh. “We’re putting ourselves in some situations where we have to execute. The bounce of the ball … you got to get it to go in your favor sometimes.”
