Bismarck tops Grand Forks in double OT during girls hockey semifinalsGRAND FORKS – Prior to their semifinals girls hockey game on Friday against Grand Forks, Bismarck players jotted some things on a board in the locker room that they wanted to accomplish.
The team’s four seniors – Brianna Flynn, Haleigh Springan, Bailey Wike and Abby Beehler – wrote the final phrase, “We are never letting Grand Forks end our season again,” on the board minutes before skating against the KnightRiders.
A few hours later, Bismarck was celebrating a 2-1 double-overtime win over Grand Forks during the state tournament at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
Springan scored an unassisted, top-shelf goal 11 minutes, 41 seconds into the second overtime for the game winner.
“I put everything I had into it,” Springan said of her game winner. “If it didn’t go in, then there was nothing else I could do.”
Grand Forks had eliminated Bismarck in the quarterfinals each of the previous three seasons. The win advances the Blizzard (18-7-0) to their first state final since 2009. Bismarck plays West Fargo in the championship game at 5 p.m. today at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
“It is sweet revenge, and it feels good.” Springan said. “We left our hearts out there. We gave it everything we had. I knew we had it. I knew we did.”
