Fargo Davies names new volleyball coachFARGO – Fargo Davies athletic director Lenny Ohlhauser announced to the Eagles volleyball squad Friday morning that Melissa Wilson will be taking over as head volleyball coach next season.
Wilson is currently employed by the Fargo Pubic Schools as a physical education teacher. She is also the head girls track and field coach and weight training coordinator at Davies.
“She knows our program, being at Davies since the doors have been open,” Ohlhauser said. “She works with the students and tries to create those opportunities to get the best out of those students. We feel very comfortable in her ability to take the volleyball program to the next level.”
In January of 2011, after leading the Spartans to a 28-12 record and fifth-place finish at the North Dakota Class A state tournament in her eighth season as coach, Wilson resigned as the volleyball coach at Fargo North to focus on her positions at Davies.
“I resigned from North when I transitioned into a teacher position,” Wilson said. “I thought it was in the best interest of both entities to put all my focus into Davies High School. It wasn’t about juggling all three positions. It was more about coaching where I was teaching.”
Wilson is taking over for Heather Stuberg, who stepped down for personal reasons a month after leading Fargo Davies to its first-ever state tournament appearance. Stuberg was 67-45 in three years as Davies’ coach.
“Being away from it for a couple years, I definitely missed the sport,” Wilson said. “I’m eager to get back into coaching volleyball and tapping into that passion.”
There are still three remaining volleyball openings in the metro area, as Fargo North, Fargo South and Fargo Oak Grove all still have vacant spots to fill.
