Moorhead student wins regional spelling bee

FERGUS FALLS, Minn. – A Moorhead seventh-grader won the Region 4 spelling bee recently to advance to the Multi-Region State Spelling Bee.

Jesemy Travers won the Region 4 Bee held at the Lakes Country Service Cooperative, according to Susan Ward, the state spelling bee coordinator.

Travers and four other local spellers will advance to the state bee, which starts 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, also at Lakes Country Service Cooperative.

Travers successfully spelled junta (pronounced hunta), a word referring to a closely knit group dominating a government after a seizure of power, to top 20 other spellers and win the regional event.

Jayme Aune, a seventh-grader from Parkers Prairie, was first runner-up.

Jenn-Kaminski-Horak, a Fergus Falls eighth-grader, Ethan Smith, a Moorhead eighth-grader, and Allison Prestby, an Alexandria seventh-grader, also qualified as finalists and will compete in the State Bee.
