Holy Spirit raises cash for St. Gianna’s homeFARGO – Holy Spirit Elementary School recently raised $2,188 for charity in a “penny war.”
The money will go to the St. Gianna’s Maternity Home in Warsaw, N.D., Principal Jason Kotrba said.
Upon learning St. Gianna’s needed a new furnace, students were fired up to collect money for the home for pregnant women who need a place to stay, he said.
The collection was “pretty substantial” for Holy Spirit, which has 164 students in preschool through fifth grade, Kotrba said.
It didn’t hurt that the top-collecting class was promised a pizza party, he said.
“The students really caught on to that,” he said, with some of the youngest telling teachers, “I brought my whole piggy bank so we could win.”
