Iron Dog teams in exciting race

FAIRBANKS, Alaska — It turns out that the team of Brian Dick and Eric Quam are not leading the Iron Dog snowmachine race after all.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner says that defending champions Marc McKenna and Dusty Van Meter are leading the race.

The switcheroo occurred because of a timing mistake in the 2,000-mile race from Big Lake to Nome to Fairbanks. Race officials determined that Dick, from Thief River Falls, Minnesota, and Quam, or Eagle River, were released from a layover in McGrath a minute earlier than they should have on Monday.

McKenna, of Anchorage, and Van Meter, of Kasilof, are actually leading the race by 37 seconds.

The race is expected to finish Saturday in Fairbanks.
