Letter: More gay people in ND than reported‘North Dakota is the U.S. state with the smallest percentage of residents who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, according to a new Gallup survey.”
The key here is “identify." From experience living in North Dakota I have found a large number of very closeted individuals. North Dakota laws and society make it impossible to be open about who you are.
Take the recent legislative session that refused to allow gay people in our state to have the same protections everyone else here can enjoy in employment and housing.
There are definitely more gay people in North Dakota than most would think. They are married, have children, work and even go to church, and they are hiding their true selves because of fear.
