Fire destroys rural Underwood home

UNDERWOOD, Minn. – No one was injured but a home was destroyed in a fire near here Friday evening.

According to a news release from the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office:

A neighbor reported flames at 33567 255th St. in rural Underwood around 7:30 p.m. When deputies and Battle Lake fire and rescue crews arrived, the home was engulfed in heavy smoke and flames. The fire was quickly extinguished, but the home is a complete loss.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but initial reports state the fire began in the house’s basement near the heating unit. The homeowners, Susan and Raymond Benhardus, were not home at the time of the fire.
