Letter: Rights indeed are from Creator

In response to the letter in the Feb. 9 Forum written by Hazel Meidlinger, who writes: “I always thought it was the Constitution” from which our rights come.

This is typical “liberal think” that all things, apparently including basic rights, belong to the government and they “grant” us everything we have. You say “silly me.” I only wish you were being silly.

Let me quote from the Declaration of Independence (emphasis mine): “they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights.” I don’t care if you are Christian, Jewish, Muslim, atheist or agnostic, I believe that by reason of our birth we have the right to live our lives as we see fit, so long as we don’t infringe on the rights of others. Governments cannot grant these rights; they are ours intrinsically. The only things governments can do are to try to limit or restrict our rights.

If you believe that rights are granted by constitutions, then it follows that rights can be withheld by constitutions. Is it OK for Islamic constitutions based on sharia law to withhold fundamental rights from women? I didn’t think so.
