Local store donates $50K for Oil Patch housing needsFARGO – A Fargo furniture store and its parent company are donating $50,000 worth of furnishings and other housing resources to assist local, regional and statewide organizations working to ease the growing housing crisis in North Dakota.
The gift is being made in conjunction with a grand opening celebration starting this week for Aartisan Home Furnishings, 4575 23rd Ave. S., in Fargo.
The store and its parent company, Bakken Housing Services LLC, worked with the North Dakota Coalition for Homeless People Inc. to coordinate the $50,000 gift.
Bakken Housing Services is a provider of residential and corporate housing solutions across North Dakota’s energy production areas.
About five years ago, the company began noticing a major shift in the housing landscape of the state, with many newcomers arriving with nothing more than a desire to work and to better their lives, according to Mike Marcil, CEO of Bakken Housing Services.
“These were not the traditional people we associate with homelessness,” Marcil said. “We heartbreakingly witnessed good people in tough situations who needed a hand up, not a hand out.”
Michael Carbone, director of the North Dakota Coalition for Homeless People Inc., said Marcil and his companies have been great partners to work with in solving housing issues in the Oil Patch.
“I was impressed with the willingness of a private real estate group to work with us on such creative solutions,” Carbone said. “It was encouraging to work on solutions that break down the traditional homelessness stereotypes,” Carbone added.
The grand opening for Aartisan Home Furnishings begins Thursday and runs through Monday, Presidents Day.
Events will include special offers, door prizes and free food and refreshments from Maxwells in West Fargo, as well as live jazz from the Dave Ferreira Trio on Monday evening.
