Letter: Stupid, leftist loonys

Wow, the lefties were sure out in force in Sunday’s (Feb. 3) Forum. I am one of those law-abiding citizens who is a proud and supporting member of the National Rifle Association. Now more than ever, we are challenged by a too large and oppressive federal government; one the founders recognized, understanding that tyrants first want to disarm citizens before they can control the masses.

Benjamin Franklin summed it up best when he said, “Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither.” He also said “Freedom is not a gift bestowed upon us by other men, but a right that belongs to us by the laws of God and Nature.”

As the NRA grows, we gun owners and collectors make up a wide spectrum of sport shooters, collectors and hunters, along with those of us who want to protect family and property.

The left continues to stumble over the so-called assault weapons issue, as if the prefix AR means assault. Nothing could be further from the truth. AR are the first two letters in Armilite, the first maker of a sporting arm. It is a semi-automatic firearm, similar to multiuse semi-automatic firearms, and the similarity between it and military assault firearms is nonexistent.

One writer was offended by a gun store exhibiting a “Join the NRA” message. Any gun store that does not support the NRA 100 percent will not get one cent from me, or other dedicated NRA members.

The Supreme Court ruled in 2008 that the Second Amendment protects an individual’s right to possess a firearm, unconnected with service in the militia, and to use that weapon for lawful purposes, such as self-defense in the home. That right applies not just to the federal government but to states and municipalities.

The court’s reasoning is conclusive in that the court said the prefatory clause “a well-regulated Militia, being necessary to a free state,” but concluded in the operative clause the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

The operative clause stems from the anti-federalist concerns the federal government would disarm the people in order to disable the citizens’ militia, enabling a standing army, or to select a militia to rule.

What we have happening before our eyes is the Obama administration attempting to create a gun registry, and having completed that, confiscation or taxing guns comes next.

It concerns us that so-called learned people say the Constitution should be scrapped. That’s scary. Will we go like Rome in half the time?

I don’t think so. I believe freedom-loving patriots, who are the body of the NRA, will stand and fight. You can bet on that. But the “loony left” will keep doing what they do best: looking stupid.
