Letter: ND horse neglect should be felonyThank you to KFGO’s Shawna Olson for leading the way in helping the neglected, starving horses found on private property in western North Dakota. And thank you to all who have opened their pocketbooks and emptied their piggy banks to ensure the remaining horses receive the care they need.
And now a message to North Dakota legislators: Please enact animal cruelty legislation that’s tough enough to never let this happen again. The discovery of 99 dead horses and more than 150 others starving and ailing is too much. Stronger laws are needed now, and they’re needed here.
North Dakota is one of just two states in the nation without a felony penalty for animal abuse. Let’s come up with legislation everyone can live with, especially the unfortunate animals owned by people unable or unwilling to provide proper care. We can do better than this.
