South Border wins Region 1 individual wrestling tournament
Region 1 consistently features many of the top individual grapplers and wrestling teams in the state. Last season, 46 of the 56 wrestlers that qualified for state from Region 1 placed and 12 of the 28 individual finalists were from Region 1.
Region 1 is so hot, the fire alarm sounded during the individual tournament on Saturday at Napoleon High School.
It was a false alarm, but it didn’t stop South Border – a co-op between Ashley and Wishek, N.D. – from claiming its second consecutive Region 1 team championship.
The Mustangs had a total of six individuals win championships and scored a total of 243.5 points to earn the victory. Oakes finished second with 182.5 points and Lisbon took third with 181 points.
“As a team they just gutted it out today,” South Border head coach Dwight Schilling said. “And to come out having thirteen wrestlers qualify for state out of Region 1 is impressive. This was their goal from the beginning of the season.”
Tyler Toepke-Floyd (106 pounds), Blake Bosch (126), Brayden Kuntz, (138), Tucker Meidinger (160), James Thielges (182) and Tanner Meidinger (195) each scored individual region titles for South Border, who also will be going for their third consecutive team dual state championship next week at the state tournament set for Feb. 14-16 at the Fargodome.
Bosch, who shared Senior Athlete of the Year honors with Lisbon’s Jace Berg, maintained his undefeated record on Saturday moving to 39-0 this season. Bosch, the defending state champion at 126 pounds, has won five consecutive Region 1 individual championships and will enter state undefeated for the third year in a row.
Erik Loepp (113), Cayden Coleman (132) and Michael Kelly (285) picked up wins for the Tornadoes.
Loepp, a two-time state champion, scored pin over Linton-HMB’s Josh Schlosser in 4 minutes, 18 seconds.
“It was all about getting ahead and not giving up any slack,” Loepp said. “Region 1 is the toughest region usually so getting a win here gets your confidence up for the state tournament.”
The most dramatic title match came at 132 pounds when Coleman scored a late two-point takedown in the third period against top-seeded Jonathan Grunefelder of Napoleon. Coleman, who was seeded No. 3, trailed 6-5 with a minute left in the third, but the takedown gave him a one point edge he was able to sustain.
“I was pretty tired,” Coleman said. “I was just trying to keep him down and made sure he didn’t get a reversal or any extra points to force overtime. It was a pretty good match and I am glad I got the win.”
Berg (120) and Dylan Urbach (145) scored wins for the Broncos.
Berg – the defending 120-pound state champion – scored a 5-0 decision over Brent Hebl of LaMoure by bookending two takedowns in the match.
“That first takedown is always big,” Berg said. “There is a lot more options when you are up two than down two. We were both battling and to get that last takedown was big.”
