Fargo North tops West fargo in boys swimming
On Friday, the Spartans and Packers met again, but there was no tie this time around.
North won 10 of 12 events during its 116-70 Eastern Dakota Conference dual against West Fargo at North High School.
“It was a big win for us,” North junior Tanner Bjorlie said. “There is always a big rivalry between West Fargo and us. There are always close finishes when we swim against each other, and it is always competitive.”
Bjorlie took first in the
50-yard freestyle, finishing in a time of 22.69 seconds and took the top spot in the 100 butterfly, posting a time of 56.19 seconds. He also was a member of the Spartans’ first-place 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
“He is one of the best swimmers in the state,” Fargo North head coach Dick Fisher said of Bjorlie. “He is a dude for us.”
The Spartans were dominant the entire dual. North took the top two places in five events, including
Brady Coughlin paced the Spartans in the diving portion, turning in a first-place score of 243.15 in six dives. The next best score was a 172.90 from teammate Abraham Volk.
“I was really proud of how we competed,” Fisher said. “We were smart about it. We had to overcome a few challenges and a lot of last-minute lineup changes. Our guys handled that well.”
North swept the top three spots in the 100 breaststroke. Junior Jacob Hassebrock won the event in a time of 1:07.69.
“That helped a lot,” Fisher said. “Any time you can get the top three places in an event, it is going to have a positive impact on your team score.”
West Fargo’s lone wins came in the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle. Sophomore Carson Keller edged senior teammate Ethan Doll in the 200 IM, winning in a time of 2:09.16.
Doll won the 500 freestyle, posting a time of 5:11.13.
“We are going to give them a run for their money at EDC, but we still had a fun meet,” West Fargo head coach Marsha Dahl said. “We had a few swimmers out because of an illness, but we had a lot of swimmers step up and swim well.
“We are still working at putting our lineup together. We are looking forward to the EDC swim meet.”
The EDC meet is Feb. 23 at Fargo Davies High School.
“I’m pretty satisfied with how the meet went,” Bjorlie said. “It is heading in the right direction. … It was a solid night.”
