Weather Talk: Recent Februaries not warm, but 2012, 2002 are exceptions

The average February temperature in Fargo-Moorhead is 14.6 degrees. For nine of the 12 Februaries this century, the average temperature has finished at or below that mark. One of those three years, the average temperature was just barely above normal, meaning that recent Februaries have not been particularly warm.

One of the exceptions was last year. February 2012 finished with an average temperature of 21.4 degrees, ranking as the 14th warmest on record. The other was back in 2002, when the average February temperature was 24 degrees, ranking as the sixth warmest since 1881. So when it has been above normal, it has been exceptionally mild.

Because February is usually just 28 days, this month has the lowest average precipitation of any month at just 0.61 inch. Not only has this month been generally cold recently, it has also been fairly dry, with only one February finishing with well-above normal precipitation this century, back in 2009.
