St. Ben's stops Concordia's eight-game win streak

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – There were times earlier this season when it was just the opposite.

But as of late, junior Brianna Barrett and her St. Benedict teammates have been taking control of games in the second half.

The Blazers did it again Wednesday night in their biggest game of the season so far, rallying from a four-point halftime deficit to beat Concordia 69-63 in MIAC women’s basketball action before a big crowd at Claire Lynch Hall.

The loss put an end to Concordia's eight-game win streak.

And it was Barrett who led the way, scoring 15 of her team-best 21 points after halftime.

“It’s funny because that seems to be our theme the second half of the season, but in the first half of the season it was the other way around,” said Barrett, whose team twice squandered second-half leads in December losses to Gustavus and St. Mary’s. “But now we know we can do it. We’re playing with a lot of confidence and tonight we wanted it really bad.”

St. Benedict (16-3 MIAC, 18-4 overall) has now won 10-straight games – a streak that began after an 81-68 loss to Concordia in Moorhead on Jan. 9. And with Wednesday’s victory, the Blazers moved into a tie with the Cobbers (16-3, 17-5) atop the MIAC standings.

“I thought the energy both teams showed tonight was great,” said Concordia coach Jessica Rahman, whose team saw its own eight-game winning streak come to an end. “But they had a better spurt coming out of halftime than we did. A few things happened that got them back in the game and they did a good job of seizing the momentum from there.”

Concordia senior guard Emily Thesing scored 21 points.
