Keeping a well-appointed desk
Bope, who is also a graduate student and sales associate, says her desk area keeps her focused and motivated.
“I work in a generic work environment. My desk looks like all the other desks,” she says. “So, when I get home and sit at my desk, I’m excited.”
Bope keeps her space tidy and true to her style. She recommends changing things up a bit if your desk space doesn’t make you feel happy.
She shared some of her top tips for a desk area that encourages productivity and creativity.
- Use white as the base color.
“I like things clean and organized. White would be my base,” she says. “I think it keeps things fresh.”
- Add pops of color.
“I love stationery and bright colors, so I would add a fun, colorful pencil holder or some colored pencils as accents,” Bope says.
- Let your imagination wander.
Desk toys and little puzzles can occupy the mind while daydreaming, Bope says.
- Add a scent.
Fresh flowers or a candle create a space that appeals to all the senses, she says.
- It’s all about trays.
Adding a tray to hold random objects keeps desks organized, Bope says.
Pinterest houses hundreds of ideas for DIY decorative trays that range from brightly colored and patterned to subtle and practical.
- Quick change.
A fresh coat of paint on a desk, coupled with knob changes can create a fresh look for a desk, Bope says.
- Stay true to your personality.
“I like modern and sharp edges. Some people may prefer classic and heavy, like an old-fashioned desk,” she says.
Finding a desk décor style that works for you matters.
- Remember flow.
“Make sure things flow well,” Bope says. “Don’t add an old rug just to get some use out of it. A well-thought-out color scheme and style may just warrant spending more time in the office.”
