No. 3 Deacons surge to victory over Eagles in girls hoops

FARGO – That is a No. 9 under the grade category on the Fargo Shanley girls basketball roster. It belongs to freshman Sarah Jacobson, who was anything but a youngster Tuesday night.

She shot when open. She ran the offense when it needed to be run. She scored, almost at will with 21 points – and that was just in the first half in a 74-52 victory over home standing Fargo Davies.

“She’s a veteran,” said veteran Shanley coach Tim Jacobson. “She’s had three years of varsity experience. She’s maturing into the position and seeing the floor. I like her leadership on the floor and we all respond to that.”

Jacobson finished with 23 points, but the Deacons had more all-around power than the Eagles to improve to 11-1 overall and 10-1 in the Eastern Dakota Conference. The third-ranked Deacons took a 54-23 first half lead and put it on cruise control.

“I liked the effort,” Tim Jacobson said. “I was very pleased with our focus.”

It was still 20-14, Shanley, when Jacobson turned it up a notch. Her steal and assist to Haley Brenner made it a 10-point lead. Jacobson followed with a driving layup and a 3-pointer and it was quickly 29-14.

Later her assist to Kelly Weir and another steal and layup ended a 15-3 run that essentially put it away at 35-17.

“That’s a lot of what we want them to do – just stay with it,” Tim Jacobson said.

Sophomore Alivia Fraase added 14 points and senior center Jessica Anderson had 12. Rare was the Shanley miss in the first half when the Deacons were open.
