What should be displayed on new ND license plate design lawmakers seeking?

BISMARCK – North Dakota would have a new look on its license plates if a bill introduced in the Legislature is approved.

“The state hasn’t had a new general issue plate in more than a decade,” said bill co-sponsor Rep. Blair Thoreson, R-Fargo.

Thoreson said new plates can include technology that makes them longer-lasting. Many states, Minnesota among them, have moved from the stamped metal still used in North Dakota to digitally produced flat license plates.

He said a new plate and design would likely cost millions of dollars.

The language in the bill – which will be in front of a Senate committee Tuesday – doesn’t specify what the new design should be.
