Fargo Davies cruises past Valley City in wrestling dualFARGO – Fargo Davies closed out its East Region wrestling schedule on a high note with a convincing win.
The Eagles scored a total of five pins in their 46-24 victory over Valley City on Thursday at Davies High School.
It is the third straight dual win for North Dakota Class A, No. 5-ranked Davies (7-2, 7-1 East Region). The victory also puts the Eagles in sole possession of the East’s No. 2 seed in the state dual tournament. The state wrestling tournament is set for Feb. 14-16 at the Fargodome.
“It was a good way to end the East Region regular-season duals,” Davies head coach Keenan Spiess said. “Our goal was to get second in the East in duals and we got that tonight. It was nice.”
The Eagles were all business on Thursday.
Bryce Burnside (126 pounds), Dillon Finch (132), Cole Alexander (160), Darren Crissler (170) and David Kjera (220) each recorded pins for the Eagles.
“We had a good dual,” said Crissler, who picked up his 108th career win. “Our team was trying hard to get those pins and get those points.”
Davies fell behind 9-4 to the Hi-Liners after the first three matches, but back-to-back pins from Burnside and Finch put the Eagles on top for good.
Burnside’s pin sparked a four-match run for Davies capped by senior Cole Mehring’s technical fall against Valley City’s Evan Carroll at 145 pounds.
“This dual was tough,” said Mehring, who posted his 171st career win. “Everyone went out and wrestled well. Our team is hitting its peak right now and it is right at the perfect time.”
The East Region individual tournament is set for Feb. 9.
Before the postseason begins, the Eagles have one dual remaining against Moorhead. Spiess scheduled the finale with the Spuds for a reason.
“I really think that it gets us ready intensity-wise for the regional tournament next week,” Spiess said.
Davies’ two losses in dual competition this season have come against defending Class A state champion West Fargo and Jackson County Central (Minn.), who won the Class 2A title a year ago.
Logan Erlandson, Shane Undem and Steven Horner scored pins for Valley City (4-10, 2-6).
