Letter: Hope your marriages are not threatened by me

My partner of almost 27 years and I were legally married in Iowa on Nov. 9.

We drove down there to accomplish this because North Dakota does not provide equal rights to all people in the state.

I want to take this time to apologize to all the different-gender marriages that our same-gender marriage has destroyed here in North Dakota because of our union.

Although we cannot file joint federal taxes, cannot file joint North Dakota taxes, have not been afforded any benefits or rights that different-gender couples may enjoy because of their marriage, I realize that our union has possibly destroyed the sanctity of marriage here in North Dakota and has caused untold divorces, and for that I sincerely apologize.
